Types of IELTS Essay and Essay Structure

Today I will discuss about IELTS Essay writing part .

Following are the some of the types of IELTS essay we will look at:
  • Agree / disagree
  • Discuss two opinions
  • Advantages & disadvantages
  • Causes (reasons) & solutions
  • Causes (reasons) & effects
  • Problems & solutions
  • Compare & contrast
Not every essay will fit one of these patterns, but many do. You may get some of these tasks mixed up. For example, you could be asked to give your opinion on an issue, and then discuss the advantages or disadvantages of it.

It is very important that you ALWAYS read the question very carefully to see exactly what you are being asked to do.

An IELTS essay is structured like any other essay; you just need to make it shorter. There are three key elements:

  • Introduction
  • Body Paragraphs ( 2 paragraphs- Supporting or against with example )
  • Conclusion
To keep things simple and easy to organize – always plan on writing a 4 paragraph essay. By following this same formula, you will be able to plan your essay quickly and easily for any question.

Here is the simple 4 paragraph structure:

Introduction. This will be a short paragraph of only 2 – 3 sentences. It should clearly introduce the topic and Claim made in task question. And it should clearly state your opinion .
First Main Idea. Here you provide your first main reason of support for your opinion. Add supporting details and examples.
Second Main Idea. Here you provide your second main reason of support for your opinion. Add supporting details and examples.
Conclusion. Simply restate your opinion.

Examples are very important part in supporting paragraphs.

Also make sure not to start any new point in Conclusion . Just restate your opinion here .

IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training

IELTS is conducted in two types of test   –

IELTS Academic and
IELTS General Training

to serve both academic and non-academic purposes. Every Country/Organisation/Institute sets its own entry requirements. In some rare cases scores from both tests scores may be accepted. Both types of  test include the same Listening and Speaking components and different Reading and Writing components.

Which test do you need to take ?

The IELTS test you take – and the score you need – will depend on both your visa requirements and/or the requirements of the institution where you plan to study or work.

IELTS Academic is required to test English language proficiency needed for an academic, higher learning environment.

You may go for IELTS Academic if you want to:

Study or train at a university or college at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
Gain registration in a professional organisation (e.g. medical, nursing, accounting, engineering)
IELTS General Training is required to test English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context.

You may go for IELTS General Training if you want to:

Study or train in secondary education or a training program.
This version of the test is also often a temporary/Permanent visa requirement if you are planning to migrate to English speaking countries including Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand.

How are the two tests different?

All test takers take the same Listening and Speaking tests, regardless of which type they take. The Reading and Writing tests differ in content, depending on whether you are taking IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training.
