IELTS Writing Tips

‪IELTS‬ Writing Tips : Use Pronouns to Link ideas and Avoid Repetition

As a writer, one of your main objectives is to make life as easy as possible for the reader. Obviously, in the IELTS exam, the reader will be the examiner. One way to present your ideas clearly is by using pronouns. Pronouns help the reader to follow your argument.
Pronouns also reduce repetition.
  • Example: this, their, it, they, them
  • As a result a growing number of people are now choosing to work from the comfort of their own home.
IELTS Task 1 answer :
  • It is important to describe numbers and data in different ways to avoid repetition.
  • You will be given credit for doing this, as it will show you have a wider range of vocabulary.
  • Often in Task 1, you will need to write about percentages. It is important to be able to express these in different ways.
    For Example :
    Two-Thirds – 75%
    Half – 50%
    one quarter-25%

Writing Task-2 Tips :

Linking phrases are often used in conclusions to show that you have considered the question carefully and that you understand different points of view.
“To sum up, although it is true that exams can he stressful for children, I think that they are the best and the fairest way to accurately assess students’ progress.”
Important expressions for ‪‎IELTS‬ :
  • Describing procedures : the next step, once you have done that, at this point
  • Giving examples : such as, for instance, to give an example, to illustrate the point, by way of example, a case in point
  • Discussing results : consequently, as a result
  • Comparing : alike, in the same manner, similarly, not only … but also, in the same vein, of a similar nature, correspondingly, a related case, more or less, not in the least, to a lesser degree
How to overcome vocabulary problem of ‪ IELTS‬ :
  • Practice Cambridge IELTS 1-9 Reading Tests
  • As you work through these books, you will increase your vocabulary in the process.
  • This will will help you read faster and understand texts more easily.
  • Keep a notebook with you and add any useful new words, expressions or collocations to’ it, ideally with a bit of context so that you can see how the word or phrase is used.
  • One very important focus is on developing your awareness of paraphrase – different ways of saying the same thing.
  • This is because in the test, the questions will rarely use the same grammar and key words as occur in the text
